The IBM Deskstar (not Intel, but now sold by Hitachi) has a good history, but can still fail. The Gateway Essential 450 is an excellent computer for its slow (by today's standards) speed. I have several that I rent out. The motherboard is tough and reliable, as is the CPU. Windows 98 normally works very well in that machine. I would first change keyboards, so you can access the BIOS with the F1 key. The fact that it doesn't access the BIOS is indicative of a problem, most likely in the hard drive or one memory module, as the BIOS fails in the face of a bad component. Trade out with any other hard drive to see if you can then access the BIOS.

You should get a beep if the memory module is bad. Remove the hard drive altogether, and boot to a floppy Windows 98 Boot/Startup disk. That should give you access to the BIOS.

Then compare the BIOS number with the current one for the Essential 450 at the Gateway site. Then if it boots to the Floppy, I suspect you at least must reformat and reinstall windows on the hard drive. That will also let you know if the drive is bad. If still a problem, Take out the ATI and put in the most simple video graphics card you can find. Then reboot to only a floppy, graphics card, and one memory module of any size.

Still a problem? Change memory module. And try again. Using all the most simple, fundamental setup to get it running. If it boots and accesses the BIOS using the floppy boot disk, then you know it is the hard drive in some fashion.

Do not do anything to the hard drive if you have data still on it that you need. Rather, add a second drive jumpered as master, format and load Windows 98, then shut down and jumper your Deskstar drive as a slave. This should enable you to drag and drop all the data from the old drive. But if you use Outlook Express, you need to do a little more reading to determine how to save (export) addresses and messages. When you go to, click on support, usually up on the top right hand side of the screen. Once in support, type in your Gateway Serial number, then look for the label/icon on the lower left where you can click on downloads. When you click on that, it should tell you what the current BIOS number is. I think it is P14, or P15, and you have BIOS 10 now.
